How does the e-prescription work?
The electronic prescription (e-prescription), the digital version of a doctor's prescription, has replaced the well-known "pink prescription" since January 1, 2024. It is digitally created, signed and stored by the doctor's office. To redeem it at the pharmacy, you need either your electronic health card (eGK), an e-prescription app or a corresponding paper printout with a "QR code".
Which medications can be redeemed using an e-prescription?
- Pharmacy-only medicines (“pink prescription”)Doctor’s recommendations (“green prescription”)Non-prescription medicines for children under 12 years of agePrivate prescription for those insured by statutory health insurance (“blue prescription”)
Is the e-prescription stored on the eGK?
No. The health card only serves as a security key to give the pharmacy access to the e-prescription service. All prescriptions are stored there. All prescriptions are automatically deleted 100 days after they are redeemed.
Can I also redeem an e-prescription for relatives?
Yes. As before, authorized representatives can redeem prescriptions - but you will need the person's electronic health card to do this. Alternatively, authorized representatives can use the gematik e-prescription app to manage prescriptions or request a printout of the prescription.
Does my doctor have to issue me the e-prescription?
ButtonYes. Since January 1, 2024, all doctors are obliged to issue e-prescriptions for those with statutory health insurance.
